Point Ferman park allows the kids to play in the playground while the parents enjoy a graceful glare over Catalina Island, truly offering fulfillment for all.
Coastline – Take a walk along the ecologically diverse tide pools. Seals litter the shoreline and can be seen from Point Fermin Park. Quick tip: the intimidating cliffs at the edge of this park are nothing to mess with. Cabrillo beach provides the sand beach for the town and is split into two parts. Mother’s Beach (inner port) is for wading in light waves, while the (open ocean side) provides some surf spots and a unique place for skimboarding called “the wedge.” Many sailboats and windsurfers depart from the port to spend the day on the Pacific Ocean. The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, less than a two minute walk from the beach, is an amazing aquarium that offers a touch tank as diverse as the tide pools themselves. On a beautiful Sunday morning, as there are many in Pedro, the best place for a jog is down Paseo del Mar along the coastline. Whale watching is also possible in this area as the space between the Pedro coastline and Catalina Island is part of the route for gray and humpback whale migration.
Food – The food scene in San Pedro is unique in its diversity and authentic feel. There are many rival sandwich shops, soul food, British food, Italian food, Hispanic cuisine, breakfast spots and the best wings in Los Angeles. Featured on the Food Network has been a can’t-miss wing and burger stop as well as one of the many great breakfast places in the town. Many restaurants take advantage of the ocean and feature fish from the boat to the plate, or get the freshest fish at the San Pedro Fish Market. Rich History – The Korean Bell was a gift from Korea to the United States to signify the end of the Korean war. The coastal nature preserve and Angel’s Gate were once used as Nike Missile bases to protect the Western Coastline during World War II. Many original buildings still exist throughout the Nature Preserve and a Museum graces the bunkers at Angel’s Gate to offer a glimpse back into time.
Shopping – There are many unique shops all over San Pedro that sell items not found anywhere else. Local stores are still abundant and feature some of the nicest and most helpful people around. In some specialty clothing stores, customers can talk directly to the designers because they are selling their clothing they made. New shops, restaurants and specialty stores open often in San Pedro and leave something new for locals as well as returning tourists.
